Emera Maine is a regulated electric transmission and distribution utility. The company is wholly owned by Emera Inc., a full-service energy company based in Nova Scotia.

Emera Maine is the new name for Bangor Hydro and Maine Public Service, who for nearly a century have been bringing power to the people of Maine.

Bangor Hydro and Maine Public Service effectively had been operating as one company for some time, and became one utility, Emera Maine, on January 1, 2014.

As Emera Maine we are the same people, with the same commitment.

Our primary business is the efficient, safe and reliable delivery of electricity to customers in northern and eastern Maine. We install, operate and maintain transmission and distribution infrastructure such as poles and wires, substations, and meters. We also

offer programs and tools to help our customers to use energy more efficiently.

Our transmission services are regulated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), and distribution services are regulated by the Maine Public Utilities Commission (MPUC).

We do not generate or sell the electricity that we deliver to retail customers. Since Maine restructured its electric industry in the late 1990s, we have not owned electric generation facilities. Consumers have their choice of retail electricity suppliers or a MPUC-administered standard offer.

  • The Maine Public District serves Aroostook County and a small piece of Penobscot County.
